How will you spend your 525,600 minutes this year?
If you are reading this newsletter at work, you are
spending a few of your 1,944 work minutes. If you are reading this at
home, you could be investing some of your 1,952 fun minutes. The plain
truth is that we have over half a million minutes to use in 2006. It
seems like a lot doesn’t it. If you are a numbers person, you have
already added up these numbers in your head and know that they don’t
quite add up and are thinking, AHHH HA! Relax and don’t get your
knickers in a knot. You can have some fun by looking at the numbers
yourself to see how we came up with the equations. Click here to get the
worksheet.
I spent some of my minutes coming up with a time
management worksheet to help YOU think about how to spend your minutes in
2006. For example, I learned that my heart will beat about 63 million
times in 2006. This was an easy calculation assuming a 120 heart beats a
minute.

You will benefit from using the worksheet to manage
your schedule and demands. The exercise might change your mind about how
you will spend your minutes this year. For example, I will spend 70
minutes in 2006 cutting my lawn. This is based on cutting every three
weeks and my normal time of 4 minutes each occasion. What do you think?
Maybe I need a smaller yard or a gardener. Maybe, Sallie, my wife will
start cutting it for me.
Making the most of our time in 2006
One of my goals is to read a book a month. My 2006
resolutions are reading 30 minutes each day. I did this last year and it
always seemed to result in extending reading. The secret to this goal was
just getting started in the first place. Once you get started reading, it
becomes harder to stop.
The examples we have for success are from people who
don’t watch a lot of TV. Our leaders are selective about how they use
their time and TV isn’t one of the priorities for achieving success in
this life. If you review the worksheets on my website you will see that
there is very little time for a successful person to watch TV.
Balancing our 1,944work minutes
We only have so much time each day for work which
makes it important for us to manage our minutes. Blocking out time for the
important tasks has to be a key objective.
When I think about great time users, Benjamin
Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Lincoln each come to mind. They
accomplished so much with so little. They read books and wrote down their
thoughts and used their imagination to solve problems. Our minds are
wonderful tools and it is a shame to waste them. Planning our day will
help us use our time and talents on things that will make a difference.
Use the work sheet to balance your time. If you have questions or want
help in these areas, give me a call.
